Abhijeet Sawant’s debut album crosses the half-million mark in just two months

When Abhijeet Sawant performed at a recent album launch in Mumbai, the crowd went ballistic. Which isn’t surprising, considering his debut album Aapka Abhijeet Sawant has sold over five lakh units within two months of release.

‘‘It is the fastest-selling album across all categories,’’ said a Sony BMG spokesperson. The album, which was released on March 24, has sold more units in the first three days of its release than last year’s biggest grosser Kal Ho Naa Ho (KNKH) did in two weeks (KNKH sold 2.5 lakh units).

‘‘The Indipop scene has been really low for quite sometime now,’’ says Sawant. ‘‘I don’t think people are buying the album just to hear my voice. It’s the Indian Idol stamp that’s made so much of a difference.’’

At the moment, Sawant’s schedule is packed with stage shows. There’s a Yaaron concert today in Delhi, where Sawant will share the stage with other Indian Idol finalists like Amit Sana, Aditi Paul, Prajakta Shukre and Rahul Vaidya.

The first in a series organised by Sony entertainment, the concert hopes to pack in an audience of at least 10,000.

‘‘The main market is Delhi, but the concert could also be held in Chandigarh later,’’ says Sawant, who claims to have turned down international shows to focus on domestic concerts and playback singing.

A Yaaron album will also be released shortly and will feature 10 Indian Idol finalists. ‘‘It’s just like the first Indian Idol album that we released,’’ says Sawant. ‘‘All the songs are remixes.’’ The music for the album has been arranged by composer Sameer Sen. ‘‘Abhijeet’s got great grasping power, but most importantly, he’s a very good person,’’ says Sen. Sawant has sung two tracks-Dum and Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani-in the album.
